Visto il PPV questo pomeriggio, un PPV che per i miei gusti poteva essere migliore, ma che per il main-event passerà sicuramente alla storia, ma commentiamo con ordine:

BRENDAN "THE HYBRID" SCHAUB VS. GABRIEL "NAPAO" GONZAGA
Incontro di apertura soporifero, il classico incontro tra giovane promessa e vecchio leone (anche se c'è da dire che Gonzaga ha avuto un periodo fortunato della sua carriera, anzi un highlight, il KO su Cro Cop, per il resto è sempre stato mediocre) con Schaub che fa valere la sua migliore abilità in piedi e controlla l'incontro per praticamente tutti e 3 i round, Gonzaga si sveglia troppo tardi, irriconoscibile. O vince il prossimo incontro o lo vedo fuori dalla UFC. Schaub da rivedere, ma comunque è una buona vittoria per lui.

MATT "THE HAMMER" HAMILL VS. "THE HUNTINGTON BEACH BAD BOY" TITO ORTIZ
Discorso copia-incolla di quanto detto prima anche per il secondo incontro della serata, un Ortiz completamente bollito e innocuo non riesce a mettere in difficoltà il volonteroso, ma purtroppo per lui ancora mediocre, Matt Hamill, che però coglie una vittoria importantissima, la più importante della sua carriera. E che dire dell'ex UFC Light Heavyweight Champion? Con 4 sconfitte di fila è impensabile, nonostante il contratto, che Dana White lo tenga nella promotion di Las Vegas.

DIEGO "NIGHTMARE" SANCHEZ VS. PAULO THIAGO
Match della serata a mani basse, 3 round spettacolari con il ritorno del vero "Nightmare" che dopo le 2 ultime batoste ritrova l'Occhio della Tigre e mette su una delle sue solite performance spettacolari, vittoria meritatissima. Dispiace per Paulo Thiago, che considero un gran fighter, perchè non si merita di avere 2 sconfitte di fila, spero riesca a riprendersi.
Highlight dell'incontro la "capriola" di Sanchez accompagnata da Thiago seguita dal bellissimo (e rischioso) takedown del messicano.

JAKE SHIELDS VS. MARTIN "THE HITMAN" KAMPMANN
Debutto per l'ex Strikeforce Middleweight Champion in UFC e debutto francamente che lascia molte perplessità, nonostante la vittoria. Uno Shields che ha mostrato un debolissimo cardio (che ha giustificato con il taglio del peso) e un Kampmann che non ha saputo approfittare abbastanza di questa difficoltà dell'avversario, un incontro combattuto in maniera buona a terra da parte di Jake, Kampmann ha tentato qualche sottomissione, ma troppo poco. La decisione dei giudici può essere discutibile senz'altro, ma non è una tragedia l'aver dato la vittoria a Shields. Shields che adesso sfiderà il vincente tra GSP e Koscheck per il titolo.

BROCK LESNAR VS. CAIN VELASQUEZ
HISTORY HAS BEEN MADE!!! Cain Velasquez ha messo fine al regno del terrore di Brock Lesnar ed è diventato il primo Heavyweight Champion messicano nella storia delle MMA! Un incontro che non ha avuto storia: partenza a razzo di Lesnar che però è sembrato in tutto e per tutto un atto di disperazione e infatti dopo poco, vedendo che non riusciva a tenere Cain a terra, si è trovato spaesato e vittima della superiorità del suo avversario che lo ha demolito con un efficacissimo ground and pound. Adesso il nuovo campione se la vedrà subito con un avversario tostissimo, Junior Dos Santos. E che vinca il migliore!!!

Grande vittoria per Madsen (sparring partner di Brock Lesnar nella DeathClutch Gym) che annichilisce il veterano Yvel che a questo punto vedo fuori dalla UFC. Ineccepibile.

DANIEL "NINJA" ROBERTS VS. MIKE "JOKER" GUYMON
Anche qua, incontro molto veloce e bellissima sottomissione da parte di "Ninja" che si aggiudica meritatamente il bonus di "Submission of the Night". Complimenti.

Maledizione... addirittura ha perso al primo Round... peccato, perchè ci speravo davvero che Brock Lesnare portasse ancora avanti il suo regno di campione, anche se a dire il vero lo avevo già visto un po' traballare nel primo Round della sfida di qualche mese fa contro Carwin...
Questa sera mi guarderò l'incontro (seguo sempre tutti gli eventi della UFC nei quali combatte Lesnar), anche se peò, da quel che ho letto, mi pare che ci sia ben poco da guardare, visto che Brock ha resistito soltanto per poco più di un minuto... che dire, mi dispiace davvero.

DANA WHITE HINTS THAT TITO ORTIZ COULD BE CUT AFTER UFC 121 LOSS

UFC President Dana White didn't outright say it, but twice in the aftermath of UFC 121, he hinted that we might have seen the end of "The Huntington Beach Bad Boy" Tito Ortiz in the UFC's Octagon.
Ortiz lost to Matt Hamill in a unanimous decision in one of the night's featured bouts, a defeat that marked his fourth setback in his last five fights (he also has a draw in that time). Many fighters are cut after two or three losses, leading reporters to question White about the former Light Heavyweight Champion's future. White's answer was telling.

"I think the fight tonight was [about] Tito Ortiz's relevancy in the Light Heavyweight Division," White said during a post-fight interview on ESPN's MMA Live. "I don't know the exact number, but he's lost like four in a row. And I think we know what happens when you lose four in a row in the UFC. This is the big leagues, man."

Ortiz (15-8-1) hasn't won a pro fight since October 2006, when he TKO'd Ken Shamrock. Since then, every fight he'd taken part in saw him face a man who at one point held a UFC championship, but that streak ended when he faced Hamill, a 34-year-old who has had some success but not yet established himself as a top-flight contender in the Light Heavyweight Division. Hamill outstruck Ortiz overall 63-49, and also took him down three times, while Ortiz was unsuccessful on his lone takedown try.

"I don't think Tito looked horrible," White said. "I wouldn't say, 'Oh my God, Tito looked terrible tonight.' One of the things that is an absolute fact is I don't care who you are, how long you've been around, or who you've beat, you have to stay active in the fight game. If you do not stay active, it's hard to come back."

Ortiz was one of the cornerstone fighters for the UFC as it rose to mainstream prominence in the last decade. He held the promotion's Light Heavyweight Championship from September 1999 to September 2003 but in recent years has suffered from a series of injures. He's had two major surgeries over the last two years, one on his back and a more recent one on his neck. In the leadup to the bout with Hamill, Ortiz said he was 100 percent healthy and would make no excuses if he lost the fight.
After the fight, Ortiz held up Hamill's arm as the victor, quickly accepting his loss, but it's certainly possible that as he walked out of the UFC Octagon dejectedly, he was doing so for the last time.

UFC PRESIDENT DEFENDS PRE-UFC 121 MARKETING OF NEW CHAMP CAIN VELASQUEZ

ANAHEIM, California – UFC President Dana White said the promotion simply uses what's already there when it cuts a promo. The executive blasted critics who said Cain Velasquez's Mexican heritage was exploited in the buildup to this past weekend's UFC 121 event.

"What we do is we take a storyline in what a guy's life is," White said.

Velasquez, who bears a "Brown Pride" tattoo on his chest, sent the 14,000-plus fans in attendance into a frenzy this past Saturday at Anaheim's Honda Center when he won the UFC Heavyweight Title from Brock Lesnar with a first-round TKO. Mexican flags abounded in the arena, and the new champ sent another surge through the crowd when he told the audience, "Todos Latinos, we did it, eh?"
The visceral reaction undoubtedly was amplified by Lesnar's status as a popular heel, though it also demonstrated the UFC's success in promoting the fight to Hispanics.

Prior to the event, UFC officials sent Velasquez on a Spanish-language media tour and held a fan rally in a Hispanic section of Los Angeles. The promotion's "UFC Primetime" series deeply delved into his ethnic roots and portrayed his father, a migrant lettuce farmer, as a pivotal character in his push to become champion. Critics said the portrait wrongfully played on nationalistic pride, but White believes the marketing was an accurate reflection of Velasquez's character.

"There were some idiots out there that said, 'They have to play the Mexican thing with him because that's all they've got,'" White said. "'This guy's got nothing else and whatever.' If one of you idiots here said that, you're a [expletive] moron, No. 1. But No. 2, the guy's Mexican. His parents came here from Mexico (and) came over the border. ... Do you think we had him tattoo 'Brown Pride' on his chest? What the [expletive]?"

Put more nicely, a fighter's nationality is a backdrop and not the centerpiece of a marketing campaign.

"I don't know if you guys ever saw the Paulo Thiago piece we did where he's one of those crazy SWAT officers in the bad sections of (Brazil)." he said.

Following his win, Velasquez said he'll continue to represent his heritage and wants future fights to be in Southern California, Arizona and Mexico. White said he isn't sure whether Velasquez's victory will speed the promotion's incursion into Mexico, though he admits it could be a watershed event for bringing Latino fans to the UFC.

"I think it's big deal," he told us. "Anybody who was at the weigh-ins [on Friday] saw that he had a huge following. Here [at UFC 121] you saw that he had a huge following. (He became) a huge star overnight, and he went out and looked incredible."

UFC 122: WINNER OF NATE MARQUARDT VS. YUSHIN OKAMI "GUARANTEED" 2011 MIDDLEWEIGHT TITLE SHOT

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) today 'guaranteed' that the winner of the UFC 122 main event between Nate Marquardt and Yushin Okami would be next in line for a 185-pound title shot after they throw down on November 13 in Oberhausen, Germany.

Two of the world's best middleweight (185 lbs.) mixed martial arts fighters, Denver's Nate Marquardt and Japan's Yushin Okami, will square off in the main event of "UFC 122" on Spike TV Saturday, November 13 at 9:00pm ET/PT (same day tape). Emanating from Konig-Pilsener-Arena in Oberhausen, Germany, the winner of the Marquardt-Okami bout is guaranteed a shot at the UFC middleweight title currently held by Anderson Silva.

While the belt is currently held by "The Spider," there is no "guarantee" it will be his after Superbowl weekend. That's because he'll be defending it against fellow Brazilian Vitor Belfort at UFC 126 on February 5 in Las Vegas. And "The Phenom" has Chael Sonnen to thank.

Sonnen levied a performance so dominant (in a losing effort) against Silva back on August 7, that UFC President Dana White promised an immediate rematch, and slotted a now-healthy Belfort against Yushin Okami at UFC 122. Then the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) came along with charges of drug use against Sonnen, effectively benching him for one year (or until his appeal is heard) following his UFC 117 career performance.

Enter Nate Marquardt.
After a "Great" performance against Rousimar Palhares on September 15, Marquardt relieved Belfort of his duties in Germany and will now face "Thunder" for the chance to challenge the winner of the UFC 126 title fight.

That cleared the way for the Silva vs. Belfort championship bout in February (one that was originally scheduled for UFC 112 in Abu Dhabi until Belfort had shoulder surgery). It seems the Division may finally be working itself out. We hope.

Dopo 30 secondi era già stremato, non ha guardia quando si difende e non ha armi per reagire, una volta che Cain lo ha colpito è andato nel pallone
E poi,,,,xchè non ha utilizzato il takedown? Quando lo ha steso, con i chili in più che ha lo doveva detronizzare invece Velasquez si è rialzato subito
Così non va bene, Brock deve imparare da questa sconfitte e coprire le lacune, questo brutto ko gli fa perdere molti punti

Certo che adesso non ho proprio idea di chi possa essere il prossimo avversario di Brock Lesnar...

Prima di ieri avevo detto Frank Mir (e sarebbe il terzo e ultimo scontro tra i due), ma adesso le cose cambiano, perchè Shane Carwin si è infortunato e non potrà affrontare "Big Country" Roy Nelson il 1° gennaio, credo che Mir andrà a sostituirlo...

E non credo che la UFC voglia mandare Lesnar contro "Minotauro" Nogueira, più che altro per preservare la leggenda brasiliana (secondo me faranno Cro Cop vs. Nogueira). Boh, staremo a vedere.

Lo escludo, non ha il tempo adeguato per prepararsi all'incontro...e oltretutto Nelson è un fighter tosto, credo che Joe Silva (il matchmaker della UFC) darà a Lesnar un avversario più abbordabile, resta da vedere chi...

Mi sorprenderebbe se la UFC propendesse per un rematch tra Lesnar e Carwin, non è da escludere neanche questa pista, ma lì Brock rischia ancora di più che con Nelson.

L'ex NWA World Heavyweight Champion, WWE Intercontinental Champion e UFC Superfight Champion Ken Shamrock tornerà in azione il prossimo 25 novembre a Durban nel Sudafrica, dove nel main-event dello show "King of the Cage: Platinum" affronterà Mike Bourke.
Shamrock nelle MMA ha attualmente un record di 28 vittorie, 14 sconfitte e 2 pareggi. Nel suo ultimo incontro, disputato lo scorso 16 ottobre per la promotion USA MMA, "The World's Most Dangerous Man" ha sconfitto Johnathan Ivey per decisione unanime dei giudici. Ecco il poster dell'evento:

E' ufficiale il grande annuncio che Dana White aveva in serbo, la UFC assorbe la promotion sorella, la World Extreme Cagefighting e di conseguenza aggiunge le categorie Featherweight e Bantamweight al suo già vastissimo roster!!!

UFC AND WEC TO MERGE IN 2011, FOUR UFC EVENTS TO AIR ON VERSUS NEXT YEAR

After years of speculation, World Extreme Cagefighting is merging with its sister organization the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
UFC President Dana White exclusively confirmed that the merger will happen in January 2011, which means that the UFC will feature for the first time a 135 and 145-pound weight class. The WEC lightweight division fighters will also move over to the UFC.

"The timing was right," White said. "The reality is, we purchased the WEC, we started getting these lighter weight guys exposure on television, sending them around the country and arenas. Now, as the UFC continues to grow globally and we're doing more and more fights, now it makes sense to bring in those lighter weight classes. We're going to add more fights every year and add more countries, more television networks in different countries. So now it makes sense."

In addition to this news, White said that four UFC events will air live on Versus in 2011. The UFC will still continue it's same relationship with Spike TV. No word just yet on when the next UFC on Versus card will air. In addition to eight scheduled WEC events, Versus aired two UFC cards in 2010.
Before the merger takes place, WEC will hold its final two events. The next one takes place on November 11 in Las Vegas, featuring the Bantamweight debut of arguably the most popular fighter in WEC history, Urijah Faber. December 16 mark the final event in WEC history. That fight card, headlined by Dominick Cruz vs. Scott Jorgensen for the Bantamweight Title and Benson Henderson vs. Anthony Pettis for the Lightweight Title, will take place in Glendale, AZ. Both events will air live on Versus.

"I actually think it's cool that you'll see two more WEC events before they roll into the UFC," White said.

Of course, this means that the most dominant fighter in WEC today, Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo, will be making his UFC debut in the very near future. White said that Aldo's first UFC fight will take "probably in January". The UFC President also confirmed that the organization offered Aldo a 155-pound fight against Kenny Florian, but for unknown reasons, Aldo turned it down.

"It depends on what he wants," White said on whether Aldo's future will be at Lightweight or Featherweight. "You know, if he wants a few more fights there and then maybe try to move up to 155 - it's all up to him."

The first WEC event took place on June 30, 2001 at the Tachi Palace & Casino in Lemoore, California. The event, entitled "Princes of Pain", was headlined by Dan Severn vs. Travis Fulton in the main event. "The Beast" defeated Fulton via unanimous decision. By the time the merger takes place, the WEC will have put on 53 events, including one Pay-Per-View card in April 2010.
Zuffa purchased the organization in December 2006.

EARLY "UFC 121: LESNAR VS. VELASQUEZ" PAY-PER-VIEW ESTIMATE OVER 1 MILLION BUYS

As expected, Saturday's UFC 121 event was another major Pay-Per-View event for the UFC, and depending on where the final numbers come down the Brock Lesnar vs. Cain Velasquez headlined event may be one of the biggest Pay-Per-View events in UFC history.

Dave Meltzer in the latest edition of The Wrestling Observer reports that the early estimates, which at this point are very rough estimates, have the event at slightly over one million buys. However, he mentions that it's too early to tell if the event surpassed July's UFC 116 fight between Lesnar and Shane Carwin.

That event brought in just shy of 1.2 million buys, ranking it as the second biggest event behind UFC 100. The UFC has broken a million buys for six events, with only UFC 100 and UFC 116 bringing more than 1.05 million. Brock Lesnar, should this buyrate stay at one million or higher when a closer estimate comes in, will have accounted for around six million Pay-Per-View buys for the UFC since entering the organization.

Bè, per il TUF la UFC ha varie opzioni (secondo me Lesnar e Mir è la migliore, ma ci possono stare anche scelte diverse, specialmente adesso che anche gli atleti della WEC entrano nell'UFC), ma ormai è chiaro che il prossimo incontro per entrambi sarà la "bella" della loro trilogia.

Per non parlare sempre di UFC, ecco qual'è il "tormentone" ultimamente al di fuori della promotion di Las Vegas:

Maybe there's something to these Bellator vs. Strikeforce superfights, after all. While Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney has openly lobbied for a matchup between his company's Lightweight Champion, Eddie Alvarez, and Strikeforce's 155-pound kingpin Gilbert Melendez, Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker has yet to commit to a potential superfight.
But with Rebney now publicly pushing for his champions Hector Lombard and Ben Askren to face their Strikeforce counterparts – Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza and Nick Diaz, respectively – Coker says it's time for the Bellator CEO to get serious if he's ready to deal.

"It's something that Bjorn has chosen to take up publicly and come after us," Coker told HDNet in this week's new edition of "Inside MMA." "Really, if he wants to put something together, he should call me direct."

It was Melendez who first called for the contest while a guest on "Inside MMA" earlier this year. Rebney quickly replied via press release and openly welcomed the fight. But Coker says after a brief initial discussion with Rebney regarding the fight, the two have yet to talk again. With a number of obstacles remaining – who would host the fight, where would it be broadcast, what impact would it have on the titles, etc. – Coker says things simply can't be worked out through addresses to the media.

"We talked like three or four months ago," Coker said. "Gilbert was hurt at the time, but Gilbert is going to be scheduled most likely to go to Japan. Timing will be an issue. There's a lot of business issues that people would not normally think about. I don't blame [Rebney] because who is Eddie going to fight in Bellator now? Eddie beat Roger Huerta, and if you look at their roster, I'm not sure who he fights."

In May, Coker told us he was open to putting his champion up against the belt holder for any Mixed Martial Arts promotion. Citing current and past co-promotion arrangements with DREAM, M-1 Global and the now-defunct EliteXC, Coker said he was willing to deal. But with pressure growing from Bellator's side, and many MMA pundits openly lobbying for the organizations to work together, Coker says Rebney knows where to find him – and it's not on the receiving end of a press release.
